Pedestal 3D

Pedestal 3D is a 3D digital model hosting platform which allows registered users to upload 3D content and allows anyone to view, manipulate, and conduct analyses on uploaded models via their internet browser. Models hosted on Pedestal 3D can be embedded into LMS pages or shared via a URL.

What is Pedestal 3D?

Pedestal 3D is an online 3D object management and sharing platform ideal for use in learning and teaching curricula that are exploring digital 3D models as a form of object-based learning or content creation. The platform allows users to access 3D models of digitised objects from the collections of the University of Melbourne on demand.

As a visualisation platform, Pedestal 3D allows users to view objects through their browser and has tools that allow users to measure, annotate, and create cross-sections of uploaded content. Basic manipulation of the object may also be performed using custom tools provided by the online interface.

The accessibility of the platform allows digital 3D objects to be easily incorporated into semester activities and facilitates ongoing access to digital representations of teaching objects and artefacts outside of supervised in-person object-based learning activities.

Teaching and learning applications

Pedestal 3D can be used for teaching, research, assessment, and outreach. Some instances where the use of Pedestal 3D is encouraged include:

  • Display of objects within tutorials
  • Collaborative analysis activities
  • Student presentations
  • Study of key objects outside of class time
  • Object-based assessment of learning comprehension
  • Iterative documentation of 3D objects
  • Improving accessibility of the university's collections for students and general audiences.
