Grade Posting Policy in the Gradebook: Choosing when your students see their marks and feedback
Staff can choose when students see their marks by setting the Grade Posting Policy for the entire subject or individual assignments.
The Grade Posting Policy defines when marks are made visible to students in the Gradebook after an assignment submission is marked. The Grade Posting Policy can be set for the entire subject or individual assignments.
There are two options for Grade Posting Policy:
- Automatically Post Grades
When the Automatically Post Grades policy is selected, assignment grades, grading comments and submission annotations are visible to students as soon as grades are entered in SpeedGrader or in the Gradebook. This is the default setting and is suitable for quizzes and assignments where immediate feedback is provided to students upon task completion.
Note: Anonymous and moderated assignments are exempt from this rule and instead use the manual policy. - Manually Post Grades
When the Manually Post Grades policy is selected, assignment grades, grading comments and submission annotations are hidden from students until the Subject Coordinator or lecturer manually makes the assignment grades visible to students using the post grades function in the Gradebook. This grade posting policy is suitable for most major assignments and exams. The word 'MANUAL' will appear in the Gradebook under the name of each assignment with a manual Grade Posting Policy.
Important: Staff are strongly advised to update the Grade Posting Policy at the start of each teaching period and check whether the Grade Posting Policy has been applied appropriately for each assignment before marking the assignment.
Setting Grade Posting Policy for the entire subject
To update the Grade Posting Policy for the entire subject, refer to the how do I select a grade posting policy for a course in the Gradebook? guide.
The subject-level Grade Posting Policy will then be applied to all assignments in the subject.
Setting Grade Posting Policy for an individual assignment
If you want to set the Grade Posting Policy for an assignment that is different to the subject-level Grade Posting Policy, refer to the how do I select a grade posting policy for an assignment in the Gradebook? guide. The assignment-specific Grade Posting Policy will override the subject-level Grade Posting Policy that has previously been applied to the assignment.
When configuring the Grade Posting Policy for individual assignments, you may also schedule the date and time when grades and comments are released. This provides additional flexibility to the automatic posting of feedback.
Note: Anonymous and moderated assignments can only be set to Manually Post Grades.
