Universal Capture for students

Universal Capture is software by EchoVideo that can be used to record and edit video content from your desktop device. It will automatically publish the captured content onto the EchoVideo Lecture Capture system. From there, you can submit any EchoVideo captures you create to a Canvas assignment or share in a Canvas discussion.

Install and launch Universal Capture

You can install Universal Capture onto your personal computer directly from the EchoVideo website.

  1. Log in to the EchoVideo Lecture Capture system.
  2. Click on the Setting cog icon in the top-right corner of the Lecture Capture interface and select Downloads.

  1. Select the download option that applies to your device (e.g. Mac, Windows)
  2. Open the installation package and complete the steps as prompted.
  3. Once installed, click on Create and select New Software Capture from the drop-down options. This will open a new window with the option to Launch Universal Capture.

Once Universal Capture has been launched on your device, you will see an interface resembling the image below.

Interface elements explained

  1. Edit Details - allows users to edit the capture details including title, description, tags, quality, and publishing options
  2. User Login Controls - allows users to view their login details and Log Out. Logging out will disable Universal Capture until the user has logged back in using their University credentials.
  3. Video Source Input - allows users to toggle between and preview video sources.
  4. Audio Source Input - allows users to select and test audio sources.
  5. Capture - selecting this will trigger a five-second countdown before the capture commences. Once capturing, users will be granted the additional options to: Pause, Stop, or Cancel the recording.

Create a new recording

Universal Capture is designed to be an easy way for students to create their own recordings. We have provided some basic information to get you started below, and recommend reading the start a recording with Universal Capture EchoVideo guide for more information.

Step 1: Enter details for the capture

  1. In the top of the screen, click the Capture Details pen icon [1] to launch the Capture Details editor.
  2. Enter a Title, add a Description or Tags as appropriate.
  3. By default, all content will be captured in High Quality and published to your Library.
  4. Click Save.

Step 2: Confirm your audio and video settings

  1. Before commencing the capture, ensure that the input for your video and audio sources is correct.
  2. Click on the Video Source Input [2] drop-down(s) to select the displays intended for capture. Multiple inputs can be applied if available. You may also select No Input for an audio-only capture.
  3. Likewise, click on the Audio Source Input [3] drop-down to select the correct input source. The audio indicator can be used to test your audio.
  4. Once all inputs have been confirmed, click the red Capture button. A five-second countdown timer will display, and then the recording will begin.

Step 3: Capture and controls

Once you've started the recording, the options to Stop, Pause, or Cancel will appear.

  • Clicking Stop will finish and complete your recording, meaning that it will finalise and it will automatically be publish to your Library in EchoVideo.
  • Clicking Pause will temporarily stop the recording, allowing you to manually Resume the recording.
  • Clicking Cancel will delete the capture. Note that you cannot recover a cancelled capture.

Once a capture is finished the software will indicate the capture is uploading to the EchoVideo system.

Note: A recording cannot remain paused for longer than 20 minutes. After 20 minutes the paused recording will automatically complete and upload to EchoVideo.

Step 4: Edit or download the recording

After the capture has been uploaded, you may wish to edit your video.

  1. Begin by locating the capture in your Library, unless you have manually selected an alternative publish destination.
  2. On the thumbnail, click on the three-dots to reveal media options.
    1. To trim or cut the recording, select Edit Media.
    2. To edit title or description of the recording, select Edit Details.
  3. Once the recording has been edited. You can navigate through the same media options to select Download. You can choose to download the video or audio-only versions of the recording.

Submitting your media to the LMS

You may be required or wish to submit a video/audio recording to the LMS. For more information, see our guide on submitting media to the LMS using EchoVideo.
