LMS Quizzes (as off-campus digital open book exams)

A tool in Canvas LMS, which allows for online multiple choice, short answer and long answer question formats.

LMS quizzes can be used for a timed or untimed exam in which students answer a series of questions online. These can be set up so that they are only open for a specific window of time, with individual exceptions applied for students that have alternative exam arrangements (AEAs)

Quiz guides

Exam types suitable for LMS Quizzes

  • Exams with multiple-choice or other automatically marked quiz questions
  • Exams with short answer questions
  • Exams that utilise question banks and some randomisation of questions
  • Exams that require detailed time records that show when students have responded to questions

Features

  • Students can be presented with a series of questions that use different question types.
  • A range of question types is available, including
    • Multiple Choice
    • True/False
    • Fill In the Blanks
    • Fill In Multiple Blanks
    • Multiple Answers
    • Multiple Dropdowns
    • Matching
    • Numerical Answer
    • Formula Question
    • Essay Question
    • File Upload Question
    • Text (no question).
  • Randomised versions of the quiz questions can be created using question groups that are linked to question banks. Question groups can be configured to draw a specified number of questions randomly from question banks, creating randomised versions of the quiz for different students or attempts.
  • Some question types are automatically marked, including Multiple Choice and Multiple Answers.
  • SpeedGrader can be used to review all questions from each student and mark questions that require manual marking, including Essay Questions and File Upload Questions.
  • Quizzes save every 3 – 4 seconds, allowing students to return to their saved answers if they disconnect during the quiz.
  • A time limit can be set for each quiz, and the countdown timer is displayed to students. Student attempts are automatically submitted when time limit or Until time is reached, whichever comes first.
  • Students receive an onscreen confirmation of their submission but won’t receive an email confirmation.
  • Alternative exam arrangements (AEA) can be set up by completing the Assign fields and not adding a Time Limit. Refer to the guide for LMS Quizzes as off-campus digital open book exams for further instructions on how to configure quiz settings for AEAs.
  • Quiz responses can be used to generate a Turnitin Similarity report using the Quiz to Turnitin tool.

Other considerations

  • In a timed quiz, it is generally recommended that the Until time is populated with the due date plus 30 minutes. This time buffer is necessary to accommodate any technical issue that may affect the quiz submission process.
  • If a quiz is not timed, there is no countdown timer for students, and they must be aware of the time left before the due date to submit their responses. However, if an Until time is enabled, the quiz will auto submit then.
  • When there is a File Upload Question in the quiz, consider the time that students will need to scan or upload documents to configure the timing of the quiz appropriately.
  • Students can only submit once to a single attempt quiz.
  • A quiz cannot be set up for students to choose out of a set of questions (e.g. Please answer 3 out of the 5 questions below).
