Resolved issue: Record of recipient removed if user deletes message from Canvas Inbox

When a group message has been sent to multiple users, if one of the recipients deletes the message from their Canvas Inbox, their name disappears from the list of recipients for that message.

Issue

When a user sends a group message to multiple recipients, and one of those recipients subsequently deletes the message from their inbox, the sender's view of that message no longer displays the name of the user who deleted it in the recipient list.

Please note this is primarily a display issue on the sender's end, as the original message was delivered as intended.

However, that recipient has effectively dropped out of the message thread and will not receive any further responses to that thread in their Inbox.

Status

Resolved by vendor July 5 2025.

This issue was first reported by Canvas on February 20, 2025.

Workaround

No workaround or fix available.

To ensure all students receive follow-up replies to message threads, staff can reselect the intended Section, Group, or “All in Students” in the To field of the new message.
