Known issue: Subject imports do not warn staff about missing group sets

Issue

Group sets are not included when staff import group assignments or group discussions between Canvas subjects, and Canvas does not warn staff of this during the import.

If the imported item is published as-is, students can submit before groups have been re-created in the new subject. This can lead to unmatched submissions, disruption to SpeedGrader, and rework for staff.

Status

The vendor is aware of this issue and is investigating a solution.

Workaround

As a workaround, we recommend the following before publishing any imported group assignment or group discussion:

  1. After completing a content import, go to Assignments or Discussions and identify any group assignments/discussions that have been imported.
  2. Before publishing, check whether a group set has been created and populated in the new subject (People > Groups tab).
  3. If the group set is missing or empty, create the group set and allocate students to groups first.
  4. Only publish the group assignment or discussion once the groups are correctly configured, to prevent students from submitting to an unconfigured activity.

If you have already published a group assignment/discussion without realising the groups were missing, unpublish it immediately (if no submissions have been made) and complete the group set-up before republishing.
