Digital health check
What is a digital health check?
Digital health checks are run by the Digital Assessment Support team to determine if your digital exam is ready for delivery. It checks the status of your digital exam, double checks that all back-end settings have been applied correctly, and identifies any outstanding issues or errors that may be present prior to your digital exam.
Common issues identified from a digital health check
Once a digital health check has been completed, you will receive an email notification. Listed below are common notifications that are sent out and what they mean.

Quiz is unpublished | The LMS quiz is still unpublished. Please note that availability controls for students are still enforced when your quiz is published. Students will not be able to see the quiz content until the ‘Available from’ date and/or time. |
No questions in quiz | The exam shell does not contain any questions and/or content. |
Files in Quiz description | The exam has attachments and/or hyperlinks in the instructions. There are some limitations with opening file attachments in Respondus Lockdown Browser and the use of files is strongly discouraged. Alternatively, the content can be included directly as a text (no question) type or made available as supplied material. |
Time limit present in quiz | Setting a time limit for an on-campus digital exam can create a risk of conflicting with the standard Duedate and Until time arranged for all in-venue exams. The time limit is managed in the venue to accommodate rare situations where an exam is interrupted due to circumstances outside students' control and to ensure that students with adjusted exam durations (such as those with Alternative Exam Arrangements) are not interrupted. We recommend removing the time limit if your exam is being delivered on campus. For off-campus digital exams, however, setting a time limit in the exam shell should not present any issues. |
Quiz points set to 0 points | Total exam marks must be set up in advance. Being notified that your exam is set to 0 points is usually an indicator that the exams total marks have not been set up yet. Please ensure that the your exam and exam questions have the correct points allocated to them. |
Quiz has multiple choice questions (MCQs) | If your exam is flagged as having multiple choice questions, we will contact you to double-check that you have enabled the needed settings for your exam. This will depend on the format of your questions and whether the answers need to be shuffled. For example, if your MCQ has an option such as ‘All of the Above’ or ‘None of the Above’ we will send you a reminder to check your Shuffle answers setting. |
Quiz is using restricted question type (File Upload) | If you have an exam that requires a file upload or uses the File upload question type, it will not be compatible with Respondus Lockdown Browser. Consider removing the file upload component. |
Show Correct Answers is enabled for quiz | The Show correct answers setting should be disabled as leaving it enabled will reveal the answers to the student as soon as they submit their responses to an exam. |
Quiz is set to Automatic Posting Policy in Gradebook | This setting being enabled will automatically provide their results once they have submitted their exam. The grade posting policy should be corrected to Manual so that all scoring will be kept hidden from students. |
Entry is a Cadmus exam | Canvas AEA settings do not flow through automatically to Cadmus. The Digital Assessment Support team will check those and will notify you once AEA checks have been completed. |
Practice exam visible | If you have created a practice exam to help students familiarise themselves with the Respondus LockDown Browser environment, ensure that it is not visible on the day of the actual exam. |
Other issues
While the above are the most common issues that may be encountered during a digital health check, the process itself can be as dynamic and varied as the exams themselves. Below are some additional issues that have been identified in previous digital health checks:
- Image or screenshot in the quiz question is broken. The image will need to be re-uploaded using the upload button. Copying and pasting an image is discouraged to preserve image integrity.
- Audio file embedded in quiz question is broken. The file will need to be re-uploaded.
- Quiz question or answer options are blank. These fields will need to be populated.
- Table or chart built into the quiz question looks incomplete. The tables or charts will need to be filled out.
- Links to download an image or diagram are embedded in a quiz question. No hyperlinks are allowed inside any on-campus digital exam.
- Links to external websites as bibliography reference for case study-based exams are present. No hyperlinks are allowed inside any on-campus digital exam.
- Multiple dropdown quiz questions have extra answer boxes without statements.
- Multiple dropdown quiz questions do not have a dropdown field available.
- Multiple dropdown or multi-select type quiz questions have a blank answer option.
- Essay type quiz questions are missing a text entry field. Students will be unable to type their response anywhere.
- Information in the table prior to essay type quiz questions are missing.
