Known issue: SpeedGrader may misrepresent word count
Under certain conditions, the word count of submitted assignment documents may be misrepresented by the SpeedGrader interface
Issue
Documents created with Microsoft Word, particularly when using the Aptos font, then saved as PDF for submission, may have the word count misrepresented by the Canvas SpeedGrader interface. The margin of error displayed in SpeedGrader may be minor (around 10%) but has been reported anywhere up to 50% or more.
The issue appears to also be exacerbated if the student chooses the PDF save option, “Best for electronic distribution and accessibility (uses Microsoft online service)”.
Status
The vendor has been notified.
Workaround
To ensure accuracy, the only way to prove the word count is accurate is to download the submission and open in MS Word to use the word count feature there.
Alternatively, staff may wish to request students submit in DOCX format rather than PDF, and avoid using the Aptos font if this issue is particularly problematic for assessment. However, please note that minor discrepancies (less than 10%) may still be seen in the SpeedGrader interface with these workarounds.
