What is UDOIT?
UDOIT (Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool) is a sophisticated yet user-friendly tool designed to enhance the accessibility of subjects and subject content. Staff can use UDOIT to create easily interpretable reports and then utilise the integrated features to optimise their course materials.
Upon analysing subject content with Canvas LMS, UDOIT generates a detailed list of accessibility issues, accompanied by actionable recommendations to rectify these items. The results can be filtered by type, impact, and ease of implementation. Additionally, UDOIT incorporates a file conversion utility, enabling the transformation of Word documents and PDFs into Canvas pages.
Note: UDOIT is only visible to staff. Students cannot access this tool.
Teaching and learning applications
The most accessible form of documents within the LMS is HTML pages. HTML renders and scales on most platforms including mobile, and is compatible with screen reading devices. UDOIT offers the ability to format shift from popular file formats such as PDF and .DOCX to Canvas pages (HTML).
All websites and applications which form part of the University web presence are expected to be compliant with the W3C's Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA guidelines. UDOIT can assist with the process of making content within the LMS compliant.
Access and licensing
All University of Melbourne staff have access to UDOIT through the University licence. The tool has been integrated into Canvas LMS and is available in all subjects.
