Feature update: Student participation settings in subject
A visual update on the Subject Settings page in the LMS offers better clarity on how student participation is managed in a subject.
The newly added Participant section includes the option to select participation by either term or subject. Subsequently and if required, restrictions can be set whether students can view subjects before and/or after the defined term or subject duration.
This replaces the previous option to select the participation checkbox “Students can only participate in the subject between these dates”.
As a reminder: Subject conclusion is driven by either reaching the term end date or subject end date. In both cases, subjects become ‘read only’ for students and teaching staff.
Participant section displays 'Term'
This option sets student subject participation to the start and end date as defined for the term (e.g. Semester 1, terms start and end date: 19th of February - 6th of August 2021).
If required, select subject viewing restrictions for students. This will make the subject inaccessible for students.
Participant section displays 'Subject'
This option sets student participation to the start and end date as defined for the subject, regardless of the term duration.
You may see a warning icon when subject dates default to midnight, stating: “Course (subject) participation is set to expire at midnight, so the previous day is the last day this course (subject) will be active.”
Any section dates created in the subject override subject dates.

How are current subjects impacted by this update?
There is no change to how subject participation is managed. It is merely a visual update. This means, current subjects have automatically adapted to this new visual change, based on existing student participation settings.
